Money makes the world go round and Australia is no exception. In order to live comfortably in Australian you will really need about 12,000 – 20,000 AUD (depending on which city you chose) for everyday living expenses per year.
You don’t need to bring this money with you, most banks; ATM and EFTPOS machines will allow you to access your overseas account for a fee. If you are planning on staying in the country for more than a few months, I would suggest setting up an Australian bank account to avoid the international fees.
All credit cards are good and you can use them for anything from buying a ticket to the opera to a burger at MacDonald’s. American Express and Diners’ Club will often have an additional surcharge so if you can use a debit, Visa or MasterCard you are generally better off.
In Australia you don’t need to be concerned with calculating tax. In the majority of cases this is done for you and the price tag you see will have tax included.

For larger items like rent and/or homestay you will usually pay fortnightly (the majority of Australians are paid every two weeks) Prices will vary but expect to pay approximately:
- $150 - $200 for homestay with breakfast included
- $90 - $150 for a room on campus
- $100 - $200 for share accommodation
- $200- to rent your own place
