Australia is the oldest and flattest continent on earth. Despite being one of the world’s wealthiest countries its oldest building is only a just over 200 years! This is because up until 1788 only the indigenous Australians inhabited this country. They lived in tribes and off the land; much of Australia’s unique and untouched flora and fauna is a result of not being colonized by the Western world until a few hundred years ago.
Australia is a huge island- about the size of the United States (minus Alaska) and much of it is uninhabited to this day. The majority of our 20 million inhabitants live on the coast and most of them on the eastern side in major cities, There are approximately 4 million people in Australia’s largest city- Sydney .
From the beginning Australia was a land of migrants. The Aboriginal people are thought to have come here over 40,000 years ago from Indonesia and the British arrived in the late 1700’s. Since then, people from all over the world have decided to visit or even immigrate to Australia. Approximately 23% of all Australians are foreign born and each year over 400,000 students from over 200 countries opt to study in Australia.
Not only do we have internationally recognized educational facilities and programs, we are sensitive to the cultural and religious needs of visiting students and new Australians alike.
