Getting around in Australia

Presently this information is restricted to Sydney. Stay tuned for more information on other major Australian cities soon.

Sydney airport is approximately 10 kms south of the city center.
Once in Sydney, getting around really depends on where you chose to live. Sydney was never a planned city and to call it sprawled is an understatement. Few people actually reside in the city centre and the majority of residential living is in the suburbs. It is not uncommon for a Sydney-sider to spend 30 – 60 minutes in public transport getting to work. If you want to avoid such a situation carefully read up on where you are going to study and chose a suburb close to that or close to a railway station.

Most Sydney-siders rely in public transport. If your suburb does not have a train station chances are it will soon or there will be a list of different busses or ferries that will get you where you need to go.

Public transport in Sydney is fairly clean and not too expensive. Ask about weekly or monthly passes as these are cheaper and save you time lining up every day for a new ticket!

In an Emergency
The emergency contact number in Australia is 000. This will connect you to an operator who will ask questions about the nature of the emergency and call the appropriate service (fire, ambulance or police). It is important to be ready as you will be asked to provide information on the nature of the problem and your location.
000 will contact emergency from a land-line and most mobile phones. For some newer digital mobile phones you will need to call 112.

It is a good idea to find out the number for your local police station as this is the best place to call if you have any issues that do not require immediate attention.
Many schools and institutions will have an emergency contact number available to you. It is a good idea to put this number as a contact in your phone just in case.
