An intransitive verb is where there is no link between subject (what or who is doing the action) and object (what or who is affected by the action. Sleep is intransitive because it is not a verb that gets done to something else, like drive the car, feed a cat etc.
Also, some passive forms of verbs have an intransitive outcomes. She drove the car --> the car was driven. They killed the soldiers --> the soldiers were killed; in other words, you can't tell who did what to whom or what.
